Some people have not used a garden designer before. Often their first question is:
What is involved in garden design?
- The first stage is a meeting to discuss your design, after which I do a site survey. I then come back with an initial proposal including plans and perspectives. You are able to see how the garden will look and we can make adjustments if necessary.
- The next stage is to prepare detailed drawings for the hard landscaping and planting.
Depending on the extent of your scheme these may include construction drawings for special items such as water features or garden buildings. If you require lighting they will include an electrical layout.
To complete the design documents there is a written Schedule of Work and Plant List, enabling the contractors who tender for the work to give comparative estimates.
- You may also wish me to carry out site supervision of the work in progress. This can be done on a regular (weekly) basis or at crucial points in the project, e.g. the setting out of hard landscaping or planting.
If you don’t need a full design scheme you can mix and match the services as you wish:
Landscape Design
Planting Schemes
Lighting Layouts
Can be supplied for individual areas or the whole garden. If required I will arrange for a contractor to estimate for and carry out the work.
Custom Designed Items
one off items, including furniture, garden buildings, pergolas or water features can be individually designed and built for you
I need a design but would like to do the work myself
Should you wish to carry out the project yourself, perhaps over a period of time, I provide a design layout to work to, plus a description of the materials and planting.
I would like some advice on my garden
You can ask for a consultation visit (normally two hours) to discuss any ideas or problems you may have with planting and maintenance, or get you started on a design. I make on the spot plans and sketches where appropriate, with suggestions for materials and planting.
What about fees?
Every scheme is different, so without meeting you and seeing the garden it is not possible to make a realistic fee proposal. My fees are based on the size of the garden (or area), and the complexity of the scheme. After our meeting I write confirming your brief, the design work involved and the fee for each stage. Then, when I have your agreement that this is to your satisfaction I go ahead with the design.
If you would like further information on my design service please give me a call.
