The design draws on imagery of the coastal landscape near Cardiff to create a practical, contemporary outdoor space for a young couple.
The polished natural sandstone paving is smooth enough for bare feet while the turf seat provides the pleasure of lying on grass without the need for a lawn.
Pulhamite was employed in the Victorian period to simulate natural stone – here it has been used to make the rock pool, which sparkles with underwater lighting and glows at the base of the red cliff.
Soft greens, blues and silver have been chosen for the planting to continue the coastal theme - aromatic Lavender, Thyme and Chamomile creep over the paving while contrasting accents are provided by the foliage of Phormium and Heuchera. The rare Wild Leek, Allium ampeloprasum grows on Flat Holm and local cliffs, as a reflection of this, more conventional Allium varieties have been included. The majority of the plants will survive drier summers, however the paving is not pointed, so any rainfall will run directly to the borders and beach pebbles around the planting will help to keep in moisture.
